Barbora Bereznakova

Coming from a family of psychologists with a strong commitment to social development, Barbora's work focuses on collective memory and various social trauma. Her latest work analyzes the impact of political events on the lives of individuals in post-communist societies through an innovative filmic vision.

Barbora’s work contextualizes contemporary social challenges through film, site-specific interventions, music videos, and video art installations.


Barbora holds a Masters Degree in Film dramaturgy, editing, and sound montage from The University of Performing Arts in Bratislava. Barbora has received scholarships to the Departamento de Comunicación Audiovisual, Documentación e Historia del Arte, UPV in Valencia in 2010, and The Film Directing Program at The New York Film Academy, NYC, in 2011. Engagement with various film forms, classic animation, motion graphics, sound design, and creative writing, contribute to a sophisticated, comprehensive artistic vision. 

She has received grants and funding for her projects from the Audiovisual Fund, The Czech State Fund of Cinema, Public Broadcaster RTVS, Open Society Foundation, Tatrabanka Foundation, as well as other private sources. 


Her feature documentary debut, Never Happened, nominated for National Awards Slnko v Sieti 2020, premiered at Warsaw International Film Festival in 2019, following screenings at DocEast, Jihlava, belDocs and other festivals. Her works received various awards (Best Doc Cinematic Film Festival, Tatrabanka FoundationAward, etc.) Her films have had festival and cinema distribution, gallery and site-specific screenings, TV and VOD broadcast, and have attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers.

She has held multiple solo and collaborative exhibitions in Photoport Gallery, Kunsthalle Lab, DOT.gallery, BIELA NOC art festival, Neviditeľná Štiavnica (SK), La Casa Encendida (ES), MACLA San José (CA, USA), Ireland, Brasil etc.


Bereznakova is an alumni of Berlinale Talents 2021, IDFAcademy 2018, and was selected to participate in programs such as ExOriente 2017, DOC.incubator 2016, MIDpoint (winning best script award in 2014), as well as various artist residency programs. She is a member of Film Fatales network. Barbora currently resides in Berlin, where she works freelance on her artistic and commercial projects.
